“My children’s grandmother referred us to a local shelter our second day here. From there we received assistance with food, clothing, and more. I was amazed how friendly and helpful everyone was.”

Gives emergency financial assistance to those in need of such things as food, shelter, and utilities.
Assists with transitional housing and case management for homeless families.
Provides hot meals and personal items to those who otherwise could not afford them.
Helps to keep individuals and families in their homes, preventing them from becoming homeless.
Increases self-sufficiency by helping low-income individuals further their education.

Need: 3,429 people on waiting list for housing assistance. 1,597 households currently receiving housing assistance.

Results: Last year, 99 families participated in a self-sufficiency program, pursuing education and employment goals. 10 participants completed the program, 6 of which became totally self-sufficient and 1 who became a homeowner. 45% of participants maintained employment throughout the year and 53% of participants attended a post secondary education institution.

Need: In Sioux Falls, 40% of elementary students and 35% of middle school students rely on free or reduced cost school meals to provide them their daily nutritional intake.

Results: The BackPack Program, United Way’s newest initiative, will provide weekly food packages to more than 2,700 students. The food packages provide much-needed nutrition over the weekend.
