Disabilities Impact Area

• Provides social and recreational opportunities to people with disabilities.
• Helps individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible by providing assistance with employment, housing, and/or medical support.  
• Increases skills in English reading, writing, and communication. 
• Assists with evaluations, treatment, and education for children with communication disorders.

Need:  There are over 18,000 individuals in the Sioux Empire with some sort of disability.

Results:  146 adults with disabilities received assistance to gain or maintain their independence last year.  40% of participants chose where/whom they lived with or lived in integrated environments.  71% participated in community activities and interacted with members of the community.  67% of participants chose where they work. 

Need:  10% of the population suffers from a communication disorder.  10% of young children have speech sound disorders.  7.5 million people in the US have trouble using their voices.  More than 3 million Americans stutter.  Children with speech sound disorders are at high risk for reading and writing disabilities. 

Results:  Last year, 3,846 children received a variety of services relating to speech, language, literacy, etc.  90% of the kids made progress with their speech/language abilities.
