Seniors Impact Area

Need:  SD has one of the highest % of 65+ population – with 9.9 persons per square mile.  Census in 2008 shows that 14.4% of population is 65+ and 11.1% of the 65+ population is below the poverty level. 

Results:  Seniors are matched with volunteer opportunities across the Sioux Empire.  Their total hours of service in 2009 were 58,754.

Need:  2004 study found that 79% of baby boomers believe they will be working at least part-time during their retirement and 30% planned to work for enjoyment, while 25% would work for the needed income.  For the first time in 3 decades social security recipients will not receive a benefit increase.

Results:  409 older adults received a wide variety of career-related services.  Clients received resume assistance, learned job training skills, and participated in job fairs.
