Get to know the SEUW Crew: Joe Bumann

Sioux Empire United Way is excited to highlight our Finance & Database Specialist, Joe Bumann.

Joe was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He later attended South Dakota State University and received a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Prior to joining the Sioux Empire United Way team, Joe completed two summer internships right across the street at PREMIER Bankcard, where he developed valuable analytical and professional skills.

At Sioux Empire United Way, Joe supports finance and database operations, helping ensure accurate gift processing, donor data management, and reporting. Leveraging his background in mathematics and experience with Excel, Power BI, and data analysis, he enjoys improving processes and using data to support informed decision-making.

What is your role at Sioux Empire United Way, and what does a typical day look like for you?

I am a Finance & Database Specialist, and a typical day involves processing mail, processing pledges, maintaining our database, and running reports. 

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

My favorite way to spend a day off is grabbing a cup of coffee, playing pickleball, and relaxing.

Dogs 100%

What is something you do at work that makes your job more fun?

Something I do at work that makes my job more fun is interacting with my coworkers throughout the day!

If you had to describe your job using only a movie title, what would it be?

Moneyball

What’s one thing you love about our workplace culture? 

I love that everyone is hardworking while also genuinely caring for and supporting one another.

What’s one skill you’d love to learn?

I'd love to learn more about cooking or continue developing my coding skills.

What’s the weirdest or funniest job you’ve ever had? 

I've been umpiring fast-pitch softball for more than eight years!

If you could swap jobs with anyone in the company for a week, who would it be and why?

If I could swap jobs with anyone in the company for a week, I'd swap with Taryn because she's always full of energy and gets to be out and about across the Sioux Empire.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or what do you like to do for fun? 

I enjoy watching movies and TV shows, traveling, going on walks, and spending time with friends and family. I'm also an avid sports fan and support the Minnesota Twins and New Orleans Saints.

What’s the last show you binge-watched? 

The last show I binge-watched was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms after reading the book.

What’s your dream travel destination? 

My dream travel destination is Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.

If you could have any superpower for a day, what would it be and why? 

If I could have any superpower for one day, it would be the green lantern ring as I could fly and construct anything I could imagine.

If you were an action figure, what accessories would you come with? 

If I were an action figure, I'd come with my phone, a pair of headphones, a cup of coffee, and a pickleball paddle.
