We help you help your community.

Join our growing network of enthusiastic volunteers to learn, grow, and make an impact in your community through Sioux Empire United Way's network of supported agencies. We help members better understand the human service needs – providing for children, vulnerable adults, and people in crisis – right here at home.

In 2023, Volunteer United – formally known as Emerging Leaders – made an incredible impact in the Sioux Empire donating over 360 volunteer hours. We hosted solo, hybrid, and group events creating over 16,300 instances of impact. Check out our full impact report here!

Upcoming Events

Check out our events calendar to see how you can get involved!

Join the Volunteer United group afterschool at Hawthorne Elementary where our team will work alongside Volunteers of America, Dakotas to uplift and support children in our community. Together we'll build marble mazes and popsicle catapults!

Volunteers of America, Dakotas is dedicated to helping people live healthy & fulfilling lives by guiding people with behavioral health needs, uplifting children, youth & families, supporting individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities, and strengthening those struggling with homelessness.

Join us for an exciting conversation in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

During this year's Disability Awareness and Employment Panel we'll be featuring three SEUW funded programs supporting individuals with disabilities and two SEUW Board Members. We'll discuss a myriad of topics surrounding disability awareness, employment accommodations, accessible hiring practices, and more.

Lunch will be provided and there is a maximum attendance of 30 people. If you have any dietary restrictions or need to request any accommodations, please don't hesitate to email ivy@seuw.org

Once you're all signed up, don't forget to add it to your calendar!

Join Volunteer United & the Helpline Center at Active Generations for a community-wide day of volunteering! With their annual "Fall Into Service" event, they hope to connect volunteers & nonprofits while completing portable service projects. In the past, volunteers have made hygiene kits, dog toys, and more.

Last year, Volunteer United prepared over 500 Coins for Kids packets that will be sent to Sioux Falls School District elementary schools to raise funds for Imagination Library. And this year we'll be preparing Imagination Library books to be distributed across Little Free Libraries in our community.

In addition to completing service projects, VU is also looking for volunteers to help set up the event as well. Time slots are in 1 hour and 45 minute increments and will be completed indoors!

Join the Volunteer United group to help support Workers on Wheels of Active Generations with their Annual Rake the Town event. Over 1,200 volunteers across the city will come together to rake the yards of nearly 400 elderly and disabled homeowners in the Sioux Falls & we'd love for you to join us!

Each SEUW team will commit to one yard assignment which will be provided closer to the event. If inclement weather arises, teams will need to reschedule and complete their assignments as soon as possible.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable, protective clothing and shoes. This project will require volunteers to be comfortable working outside, using yard tools, lifting/bending as needed. Rakes, yard waste bags, hedge trimmers, and gloves will be provided, but you are more than welcome to bring your own!

Join us to support Furniture Mission in their efforts to provide gently used furniture and household items to those in need. Together we’ll help make furniture deliveries, serve families onsite, pick-up furniture donations, and/or unload drop-off donations!

Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable, protective clothing and shoes. This opportunity will require volunteers to be comfortable lifting 30-50 lbs or using a dolly/cart to move items. A few volunteers may also be asked to drive the Furniture Mission truck (no CDL is required). If volunteers are not comfortable riding in the trucks, they can follow the driver in their own vehicles.

Staff has notified us that there is an entrance and street parking on the east side of the building. Deliveries will be routed and on a clipboard for when volunteers arrive & families have been notified that the furniture will be delivered inside their homes. To make things easier on both the families and volunteers, deliveries never include king mattresses or full-sized couches!

In 2023, Sioux Empire United Way mailed 239,744 books to children in the Sioux Empire through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Join Volunteer United in delivering more of the books you love to the Little Free Libraries in our community. Stop by Severance Brewing Co. for happy hour with light bites from Papa Woody’s Pizza as you pick up your assignments.

Volunteers are encouraged to drop off an average of 30 children's books between 4-6 locations by November 18th. Volunteers will be required to drive their own vehicles and addresses will be provided.

Join us at Delta Dental of South Dakota to assemble oral health kits! We'll put together bags for children in the Sioux Falls School District and assemble New Smile bags for new parents at local hospitals.

Volunteers can park on the street on the West and South sides of the Non-Profit Center. There is an entrance in front across from the Canaries Birdcage.

Join Volunteer United & The Community Outreach at this year's Sharing Christmas store! Families who have graduated through the adopt a family program or are connected through other nonprofits, such as Hope Coalition, are invited to shop the store for gifts for their children.

Last year, we helped Community Outreach serve a total of 415 parents and over 1,200 children receive gifts for Christmas. This year, volunteers will place price tags on items, help families pick out gifts, assist with checkout, and/or help carry bags to vehicles.

Volunteers are not expected to serve all four days. Please pick the time slot that works best for you!
