Meet: New Board Member Sara Mitchell

Sara MitchellJoining us on the Board of Directors this year is our new Marketing Division Chair, Sara Mitchell, a Communications Strategist for Midco.

How did you get involved with United Way?

I started my involvement with United Way via Emerging Leaders. I initially joined this group because, as a young professional at the time, I was hesitant to give my treasure and this was an opportunity to give my time through volunteering at United Way funded agencies.

As an Emerging Leader member too, what's been your favorite Emerging Leaders volunteer project?

Ah! So many amazing experiences come to mind. I really enjoy learning about all of the different agencies and spreading the word about what they do.

But, I would have to say that one of my favorite volunteer projects was when we delivered furniture for the Furniture Mission. The recipients are so incredibly happy to see you, invite you into their home, and accept the furniture. It’s truly amazing to see people’s faces light up when you arrive. These types of organizations rely on the United Way to keep doing what they’re doing – and it’s amazing to see the impact first hand.

Another great one comes to mind was when we handed out books after the book festival. Many parents were so surprised to discover we were giving away the books for FREE and then the kids’ eyes lit up, equally excited to find out that they could pick the book of their choosing. Were we just there to give away books? Yes. Did we make an huge impact in some family’s lives in less than two hours? Also YES!

What message do you share with others when you talk about volunteering/supporting United Way?

The United Way makes a direct impact on so many nonprofits in our community. I know that’s cliché, but it’s true. You may have never heard of some of the benefiting organizations – or some might only have 1-2 people on staff. The team at the United Way knows that small organization does not mean small impact! They ensure that even the small nonprofits have what they need to continue year after year.
