Nonprofit to Know: Sad Isn't Bad

Grief is hard—for children, for parents, for anyone navigating loss. That’s why Sad Isn’t Bad exists. Supported by Sioux Empire United Way, this free four-week program helps school-age children (K–12) and their caregivers process grief in a safe, welcoming, and compassionate environment.

Sioux Empire United board member, Adrienne McKeown, and her family utilized the Sad Isn't Bad program when going through the loss of a loved one. Please watch her inspiring testimony in our latest impact video here.

What Families Can Expect

Each session begins with a warm, shared dinner, giving families a chance to relax and connect. After the meal, participants break into age-based groups led by experienced counselors and social workers:

  • Children’s Group – Activities and conversations designed to help kids understand and express their grief in healthy ways.

  • Teen/Adolescent Group – A safe space for teens to share their feelings, connect with peers, and learn coping skills.

  • Adult/Caregiver Group – Support for parents and guardians navigating their own grief while caring for grieving children.

To ensure the whole family can attend, childcare is provided for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

The mission of Sad Isn’t Bad is to support children and their families who have lost a loved one. Sad Isn’t Bad is for the whole family to:

  • help children identify and express their feelings in a healthy way
  • foster open family communications
  • provide tools to help individuals continue on their grief journey

For each session, groups meet once a week for four weeks. Professional counselors and social workers lead separate groups for children, adolescents and adults.

Open to All

Sad Isn’t Bad is non-denominational and open to every family, regardless of background or beliefs. Families may refer themselves or be referred by a teacher, counselor, healthcare provider, or friend. Everyone is welcome.

Why It Matters

Grieving is never easy—but no family should face it alone. By coming together, children and caregivers gain tools, support, and hope for the future. Programs like Sad Isn’t Bad are part of how Sioux Empire United Way walks alongside families in moments of crisis.
