REPORTS TO:  Chief Operations Officer

SUMMARY: The Finance Director is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial operations, including payroll, agency allocations, and financial reporting. This role requires strong financial insight, organizational skills, and the ability to communicate with various stakeholders. The Finance Director will also oversee revenue maximization efforts, cost management, and compliance with legal and organizational requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure Accountability and Meet Legal Requirements 

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and reporting dashboards. 
  • Process payroll, vendor payments, and agency allocations.
  • Manage the solicitation of requests for vendor proposals (annual audit, investments advisors, and financial institutions).
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Oversee investments to ensure compliance with investment policy.
  • Assist with the annual audit.
  • Complete and file all federal and state reports. 
  • Complete and submit surveys and reports as required by United Way Worldwide membership requirements.
  • Support the Treasurer by presenting financial reports to the Finance Committee and Board and attending monthly Board meetings. 
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the Sioux Empire United Way and the Audit and Finance Committees. 

Maximize Revenue 

  • Augment and maintain the campaign database. 
  • Assist the annual campaign by inputting verified pledges and preparing campaign reports. 
  • Investigate the status of inactive and nonpaying pledges.

Provide Key Analysis 

  • Analyze the status of and report on pledges receivables.
  • Report monthly financial statements and dashboards to key stakeholders.
  • Compare financial reports to Board-approved allocations and campaign results.
  • Evaluate recurring uncollectible pledges receivable and develop strategies for maximizing collections. 
  • Interprets and analyzes financial data, identifies trends that help the organization make informed decisions. 

Administrative

  • Plan, develop, and coordinate adherence to financial policies and legal compliance.
  • Assist staff with reports, queries, and other needs.
  • Negotiate and update contracts with offsite companies and vendors.
  • Maintain system of personnel files.
  • Maintain and update Business Recovery Plan.
  • Manage budgets and monitor operating expenses for all functional areas.
  • Monitor and update leasehold improvements, office equipment, and software listing.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND QUALITIES:

  • Experience in operating Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other office programs and equipment with high accuracy and efficiency.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Capable of prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.

WORK RELATIONS: The Sioux Empire United Way is a team-oriented organization. This position will work closely with all Sioux Empire United Way staff and with volunteers. 

WORK CONDITIONS/EQUIPMENT: The majority of the work will be indoors, using basic office and computer equipment regularly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or equivalent experience in a nonprofit setting is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in finance or accounting and must have working knowledge of accounting practices and experience with accounting software. 
  • Experience utilizing a CRM or donor database system operations.
