Sioux Empire United Way helps meet a wide range of needs across our four-county service area—Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties. One of our partner nonprofits, Active Generations, serves older adults and adults with disabilities through a variety of programs designed to promote health, independence, and community connection. Their mission is to enhance the quality of life for older adults by offering services that support aging in place and staying active. Key services offered by Active Generations include:
Supporting Caregivers and Older Adults: Essential Community Services
Caring for a loved one can be both rewarding and challenging, and ensuring older adults have access to essential services can make a significant difference in their quality of life. Several Active Generations programs are dedicated to supporting family caregivers and older adults, offering a range of services from respite care to meal support. These initiatives help individuals maintain their independence while ensuring caregivers receive the assistance they need to continue their vital role in a healthier, more sustainable way.
CAREgivers: Supporting Family Caregivers
The CAREgivers program provides local supportive services to family caregivers, helping them regain balance in their lives while continuing their caregiving responsibilities in a healthier way. By lifting and empowering caregivers, this program ensures they have the resources and support necessary to make positive changes, preventing burnout and improving overall well-being.
The Céilí Cottage Adult Day Services
For individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, The Céilí Cottage Adult Day Services offers a safe and nurturing environment in a residential setting. This adult day program provides a wide range of care services, giving families peace of mind while ensuring their loved ones receive specialized support tailored to their needs.
Day Break Adult Day Services
Day Break Adult Day Services provides social and health services for adults who require supervised care during the day. This program offers a safe and engaging environment outside the home, allowing individuals to maintain social connections and receive the necessary support while their caregivers attend to other responsibilities.
Nutrition Services/Meals on Wheels
Maintaining a healthy and independent lifestyle is essential for older adults, and Nutrition Services/Meals on Wheels plays a crucial role in supporting their well-being. By providing meals that meet USDA nutritional requirements, this program ensures that older adults receive the nourishment they need to stay healthy and active.
Workers on Wheels: Helping Older Adults Remain Independent
For older adults who are unable to complete household chores or need transportation assistance, Workers on Wheels offers a valuable service. By matching older adults with volunteers, this program helps with light household chores and transportation, enabling individuals to continue living independently in their own homes.
Enhancing Quality of Life for Older Adults and Caregivers
These programs provide essential support for caregivers and older adults, ensuring that families have the resources they need to navigate the challenges of aging and caregiving. By fostering independence, promoting well-being, and offering much-needed respite, these initiatives contribute to healthier and more sustainable caregiving and aging experiences.
