Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Michael Frankman

Sioux Empire United Way is very grateful for the leaders of our community who give their time, energy, and passion to our organization. We are grateful for our campaign volunteers who give countless hours building relationships with community leaders and business owners year after year to help Sioux Empire United Way meet our fundraising goal. We have over 600 volunteers who assist with the campaign in some way. During this Volunteer Sportlight segment, we are going to introduce you to our division chairs who serve on the Campaign Cabinet. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for continuous updates.

How did you become involved with Sioux Empire United Way?
My friend Dan Doyle approached me and asked me to serve on the board. It was a no-brainer. My wife Lexie is also a volunteer and we have been Heart Club supporters of the SEUW for several years. At the time, I was just finishing my term as president of the SD Dental Association, so it was a perfect segue for me to serve in another capacity, and get more involved in the community.

Tell us about your expereince and involvement with one of our funded programs, Sioux Empire Smiles.
During my time as a leader in the Southeastern District Dental Society, I was involved with the SEUW in the formation of Sioux Empire Smiles, a one-day, free dental clinic for low-income, uninsured children who do not see a dentist regularly. Volunteering annually at the event (and subsequently treating some of the children in my private practice) has been an extremely rewarding experience for me. After volunteering, I realized even more the need is so great for the program, as lack of dental care and the pain caused by it can have an effect on children academically and behaviorally.

Why should others consider supporting Sioux Empire United Way?
The need in the Sioux Empire is greater than ever. An investment in the SEUW is easy, impactful, and helps everyone in our great community.

Additional thoughts to share with our readers?
The 1000+ volunteers serving the SEUW are so critically important during the campaign and throughout the year, but the SEUW staff is exceptional. Without them, the campaign funding over 80 programs at 40 agencies simply wouldn't happen!
